Are You Ready for an Internship or a Full-Time Job

Are You Ready for an Internship or a Full-Time JobAre You Ready for an Internship or a Full-Time JobEarly in your career is a great time to take risks and learn. Its expected that you ask questions because interns are encouraged to explore their interests tosupplement classroom knowledge. It is an opportunity not just for career development, but also for personal development. You can cultivate skills necessary in many roles and understand what your passions are.But how do you know when enough is enough? How do you know when youve maximized the benefits from internships and are prepared for a full-time sttte? As a recent graduate, my personal experience transitioning from internships to a full-time position helped shape my thoughts onwhen a recent graduate is ready for his or herbei first full-time role. Here are five factors to consider when deciding whether you should pursue another internship or a full-time role.1. You Know Exactly What You Want to DoChoose the internshipIf the que stions, what occupation are you interested in pursuing or what is your idea role, strike fear in the pit of your stomach, consider exploring internship opportunities. Most college students just spent four years taking classes supposedly related to the career they hope to pursue. But, lets be honest, maybe you dont really know what you want to do. Choosing to accept an internship after college provides the perfect time to explore and try out new skills and projects. If you relish the opportunity to work on projects not directly related to your role or to converse with people in other departments to see what piques your interest, internships are a great opportunity. Choose the full-time position If you have exhausted your desire to jump from small project to small project and had previous intern experience during your summer years of college to find your passion, you may be beyond your intern days and prepared to devote yourself to your niche. If youve already tried out different role s in your chosen field and have a well-defined sense of your likes and dislikes, youre ready to commit to a role designed to allow you to specialize and experience a greater depth in your projects.2. Youre Ready to Put Down RootsChoose the internshipWith an internship offer in another city, you can use the opportunity as a trial run to experience life in a new location youd like to explore. My internship in Seattle provided not only a trial run with my chosen career path, but also allowed me the ability to explore the surrounding area and see if I could picture myself there long-term. You may work forty hours a week, but youll also want to immerse yourself in a surrounding that is interesting. Choose the full-time positionIf you know the state or city where you would like to live and are ready to put down some roots, this is one sign that youre beyond the days of short-term planning and prepared to accept a full-time offer.3. You Found The Perfect CompanyChoose the internshipDo you enjoy working in smaller companies or larger companies? What is it you liked working at a smaller company as opposed to one that is larger? What about working at the company made you the happiest? If you cant answer these questions, an internship is a chance to try out a company and experience different company cultures. (And if you are in the generous San Francisco Bay Area, a chance to sample different snacks)Choose the full-time positionIf youve been able to experience various companies and youve found the perfect match, then it is time to settle down with a full-time offer. Wherever you choose to work, ensure that you can envision yourself as a part of that team and are surrounded by people you would want to work with. In order for choosing the full-time position to be the best option, you should be confident in understanding what it is about this company that best meets your needs and leads to a fit. 4. Youre Ready for ResponsibilityChoose the internshipMany internships do not give you the responsibility or the sense of belonging associated with a full-time position. If you still feel in the stage of in-between, not yet ready to relinquish college and accept the responsibility associated with adulthood, an internship is a chance for you to have more supervision and receive more frequent feedback during each stage of your work. Choose the full-time positionThose prepared for the responsibility that is associated uniquely with a full-time position, deciding on benefits, and establishing a sense of belonging, should look for full-time positions. If you are prepared to accept the consequences and take ownership of both your triumphs and your mistakes, without such a close supervisory relationship, your next step is the full-time role. If you relish the thought of staying the course to revise and follow-up on the results of your project, as opposed to an internship where you may end before the long-term results and benefits of the project are visible, a full-t ime role is the right fit. 5. You Hate UncertaintyChoose the internshipIf the idea of continuously meeting new people and changing situations excite you, and you havent yet resolved the factors mentioned above, another internship might be the right next step. Choose the full-time positionIf the possibility of searching for another internship every couple of months keeps you awake at night, your goal should probably be to secure full-time employment. Uncertainty is daunting. While a full-time position can provide more security, an internship has a definite end point, which means you will re-enter the job search. Even if youve enjoyed the change, new projects, new people, and excitement of your past internships, dont worry. Youll still have the opportunity to continue to learn, grow, and meet new people in your full-time job.Once youve established your passions, what makes you happy and your goals, your first full-time position creates a foundation on which to build your future. If th ese indicators are present, its time for life after internships now to conquer the world

Reducing Health Insurance Costs for Employees

Reducing Health Insurance Costs for EmployeesReducing Health Insurance Costs for EmployeesBusiness health insurance is a major cost of doing business, especially for small companies and mom-and-pop firms. With premiums soaring, many small business owners are asking their employees to shoulder mora of the financial burden or cutting benefits entirely. The New York-based Commonwealth Fund, an advocacy group for health care reform, says small business health insurance costs average 18 percent more than those of larger businesses. In California, health insurance costs increased by 10 percent in 2006 alone, according to the California Employer Health Benefits Survey. Those costs have proven too high for many small businesses. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, more than 45 million Americans are uninsured, and approximately 60 percent of the uninsured are employed by small businesses. In 2006, the average monthly cost for health insurance for small group plans, which are largely us ed by small businesses, welches $311 per month, according to a survey by Americas Health Insurance Plans, a trade group representing health insurance companies. The average premium for a family of four was $814 per month, the association reported. Small business health insurance may take a huge chunk out of your revenue, but benefits often attract better employees and help retain existing workers. Satisfied, healthy employees are more likely to help your business grow. If youre struggling to provide health insurance, here are some tips that could reduce your small business health insurance costs. Keep Employees Healthy Motorola Inc., for example, has instituted a comprehensive wellness program that includes disease management for afflictions such as asthma and diabetes, as well as offering flu shots, cancer screenings, smoking-cessation sessions and around-the-clock phone line staffed by nurses. The company found that for every dollar it invested, it saved $3.93, according to a 2003 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report, Prevention Makes Common Cents. Likewise, heavy machinery manufacturer Caterpillar estimates that its wellness program will save the company $700 million by 2015. Such wellness programs dont just keep company accountants happy. Theyre also popular with workers. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. found that 85 percent of its employees in its New York offices participated in at least one wellness program and that 80 percent used on-site facilities such as fitness centers or physical therapy, according to the HHS report. Reduce Coverage Cutting coverage or asking your employees to contribute more to the plan is a logical step to reducing small business health insurance costs. The downside of this strategy is that it will likely prove unpopular with workers. Its fairly common for businesses to exclude dental and vision insurance but talk to your employees to see what they want covered. They might opt for having den tal and vision insurance and a health savings account, for example. Consider Health Savings Accounts Health savings accounts are an increasingly popular option for owners of small businesses. These tax-exempt accounts, which are used to pay for certain medical expenses, could reduce your small business health insurance costs while giving your employees tax breaks. You must have a high-deductible health insurance plan to establish a health savings account. For example, in 2007 the minimum deduction for individuals is $1,100 for families, it is $2,200. That means that you or your employees would have to pay $1,100 out of your own pockets for health care expenses such as doctors visits or prescriptions before you are reimbursed by the insurance company. But there are benefits In 2007, employers, workers, and their families can contribute tax-free up to $2,850 for individual health savings accounts or $5,650 for family accounts. These funds can only be used to cover health care cost s, and employees can take their accounts with them if they leave. The funds generally do notlage expire. Contributions and withdrawals are both tax-free, and individuals can claim tax deductions on their 1040 forms meaning employees dont need to itemize to get the tax break. Employer contributions are also tax-deductible for business owners but are not required. Individuals can also set up health savings accounts. To establish or participate in a health savings account, your only comprehensive health insurance can be the high-deductible health insurance plan and they must be offered to all employees. Health savings accounts benefit healthy employees who do not regularly see doctors. You or your employees can, however, have health insurance that specifically covers ailments, including certain diseases or illnesses, accidents, dental, and vision care. Join a Group Small group health insurance plans cover between two and 50 employees, although there are group of one insurance plan s for the self-employed that offer similar benefits. The larger your group, the lower your premiums will be. According to the Americas Health Insurance Plans 2006 survey, 80 percent of small groups polled had 10 or fewer employees in their health insurance plans, and the average monthly premiums for individuals was $330. Firms with between 26 and 50 employees paid $287 a month for single premiums. If your business has fewer than 10 employees, you can still partner with other businesses or individuals and expand your group plan. Note that health care laws are governed by the states, so youll want to partner with people in your state. Shop Around Health insurance is a huge business, so shopping around for different providers could reduce your small business health insurance costs. Start by searching the Internet and also ask other owners of small businesses what they pay for health insurance. Insurance agents will charge fees, but youll save time and they can investigate health in surance plans for you. The National Federation of Independent Businesses partnered with eHealthInsurance, a national health insurance agency that gives you several quotes online.

3 Reasons CFOs Should Build a Strong Relationship With Their CIO

3 Reasons CFOs Should Build a Strong Relationship With Their CIO3 Reasons CFOs Should Build a Strong Relationship With Their CIOGiven the central role that technology plays in supporting modern geschftliches miteinanderes - and their finance functions - the chief financial officer and the chief information officer (CIO) need to form a productive partnership. Here are just three reasons the CFO should strive to build a strong relationship with the CIO.1. Smarter investments in ITWhether the business needs to implement an enterprise resource planning system that will be used company-wide or a Software-as-a-Service solution thats for the finance function alone, the CIO can provide expert guidance to the CFO on which technology will help the company achieve its strategic goals and increase competitiveness. In discussions with technology service providers, the CIO can help to ensure that the CFO and other key executives ask the right questions and get the information needed to make IT inv estments that will deliver the desired return. The CIO can also offer insight as to whether the business should purchase a new system, or simply update or optimize an existing one.2. Information security and complianceWhen it comes to data security, the CFO can look to the CIO for help on many fronts, including creating access policies and answering questions that the board of directors may have about the companys approach to cybersecurity. Hacking and other cyber threats are serious and ongoing concerns for almost any business today, and cybercriminal activity has been on the rise. The risk of data theft or loss - as well as potential compliance violations related to information security - is only heightened as organizations become increasingly reliant on technology for everyday business operations. Social media, as an example, can disrupt financial reporting standards. There is a case to be made, however, that some innovations, like cloud computing, can actually help improve secu rity.3. Data analyticsOrganizations of all sizes are working to find ways to turn their data into actionable business intelligence. In fact, finance teams are among the business groups most eager to embrace new data analytics tools and learn related skill sets.Of course, the CFO and other executives want to be sure that only the most relevant and accurate data is used for decision making. This requires the business to apply the right combination of technologies, processes and strategies. Enter the CIO A McKinsey Company article asserts that the CIO and other IT leaders are well equipped to lead and shape these activities and help companies raise their game on how they use data and analytics for competitive advantage. These are only a few areas where effective collaboration between the CFO and CIO can have a positive impact on the business. By developing a solid working relationship, these two C-level executives are likely to find even mora opportunities, together, to improve operati onal efficiency and organizational performance and reduce risks and costs. An additional tip for the CFO A productive partnership with the CIO can prove valuable in merger and acquisition (MA) deals. Blending the IT systems and technology cultures of two organizations can be a resource-intensive and risky endeavor. CIOs are well positioned to see the big picture on IT and their insight can help to preserve deal value.
